The challenge: Write a short story of 26 sentences, each beginning with a letter of the alphabet, from A to Z
The Alpha Female by Mark Evans
“Again! Be yourself this time!”
Creases line her forehead. “Do you see anyone else here?”
“Exactly!” he shouts. Forefinger presses ‘play’ and the sound of shouting fills the room.
Gunfire and screams. Hell on Earth.
In a millisecond she is crouching once more. Jinking to the left, she pauses, waiting for the invisible laser to pass overhead.
“Kill the lights!” he shouts. Left hand punches out and she flicks an invisible switch. Midnight floods the room.
“Now: roll, pause, crawl, swivel… jump through the door before it falls shut. One chance! Push it!”
Quick as lightning her body flexes and coils, following his orders. Reality is only what her imagination conjures. Sirens blare.
Titanium bars bite down behind her but she stops them with a clenched fist and she leaps forward. Upon this square foot of floor space she uses her other skills. Vastly more powerful than her physical skills, these are the talents that he requires from her. With such a love as his, how could she not follow his every word, his every direction… his every need.
X-rays or Y-rays allow her to see him standing before her; he is her man and she can see his every bone… and the heart he says beats only for her.
“Yes,” the skeleton standing before her grins, clapping its bony hands as the sounds on the tape fade to silence.
“Zeta, be yourself and truth shall show you great riches… in whichever safe deposit box they lay hidden!”
